The BC548 is a very common "jellybean" NPN transistor which you use when "pretty much any NPN that can handle 100mA" is called for, similar to the 2n2222 (in Europe the BC548 is the common jellybean NPN, in the US the 2n2222 is the common jellybean NPN).
