This is an 8 digit 7-segment display with an integrated MAX7219 driver. Photographing LEDs is hard, it looks better in real-life.
To make things easy for you I have written a simple Arduino library so you can treat your 7-Segment display almost like a Serial, for example
myLedDisplay.println("Hello");
is all you need to, err, print hello, if you are familiar with Arduino's Serial.print and println statement, you can print stuff on your 7-segment display just the same (within limitations, like, you can't display "w" on a 7-segment display...).
