The 2N2222 is a very common "jellybean" NPN transistor, similar to the BC548, which you use when "pretty much any NPN that can handle 100mA" is called for (in Europe the BC548 is the common jellybean NPN, in the US the 2n2222 is the common jellybean NPN).
The 2N2907 is the PNP complement to the 2N2222 when you need a PNP transistor of about the same (inverse) specifications.
